The film, shot primarily on South African locations, does offer a plethora of gorgeous landscape vistas and enough exotic animals to fill a dozen episodes of Wild Kingdom. As blandly played by the handsome Adhikari, the central character never proves a particularly compelling figure, and the frequent action sequences are rendered in such clumsy fashion, including choppy editing and an overreliance on slow-motion, that they’re often visually incoherent. The choppy, episodic storyline is dragged out for over nearly two-and-a-half hours and quickly proves repetitive.

The pair set off on an equally perilous trek through the wilderness in which they’re beset by such life-threatening episodes as a raging volcano and an attack by a mythical creature known as the “Bunyip.” Both are conveyed via rudimentary CGI effects that wouldn’t pass muster on a Saturday morning kiddie show. What saves Mountains of the Moon is the rapport between its stars and the brilliant, epic-like cinematography of Roger Deakins. He eventually meets and forms a friendship with Portuguese fortune hunter Diego ( Gerard Rudolf), who persuades him to leave his clearly dangerous job and join him on a search for the “Mountain of the Moon” that supposedly contains vast amounts of gold and diamonds. There are so many starts and stops during the first half that we sincerely hope Burton and Speke will chuck it all and set up a pub in Bristol or something. Rafaelson’s fascination with this story, and his insistence upon painstaking historical accuracy, unfortunately compromises his ability to make an interesting film. This occurs well into the film, after several torturous scenes involving the injuries sustained by the protagonists during other expeditions and their growing friendship (which, the film intimates, goes far beyond friendship). The heart of the film is the effort by Burton and Speke to discover the true source of the Nile river. The film recreates the exploratory adventures of 19th century visionaries Sir Richard Burton (Patrick Bergin) and John Henning Speke (Iain Glen). “Director Bob Rafelson fulfilled a lifelong dream when he finally received backing to complete Mountains of the Moon.

Crawford identified this range with the Mount Abuna Yosef area in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Gervase Mathew later in 1963 having made the same identification. Huntingford later noted that he was not alone in this theory, citing Sir Harry Johnston in 1911 and Dr. Oliver Thompson’s History of Ancient Geography published in 1948″. Huntingford suggested in 1940 that the Mountain of the Moon should be identified with Mount Kilimanjaro (left – one of the most beautiful mountains in the world), and “was subsequently ridiculed in J.
